Five
hundred years ago, the great discoverer Christopher
Columbus arrived at a tropical paradise in the western
Caribbean coast of what is now Panama. Overwhelmed
by the most incredible contrasts of vivid color and
sheer unspoiled natural surroundings, Columbus decided
to drop anchor and immerse in this heavenly place.
This
unforgettable adventure takes place along the historic
Gulf of San Miguel, where the Spanish discoverer Vasco
Nuñez de Balboa became the first European to set
eyes on the Pacific Ocean back in 1512
An
exploration of the realm of the Harpy Eagle, the world’s
most powerful bird of prey and Panama’s national
bird. This unforgettable adventure takes place along
the historic Gulf of San Miguel, where the Spanish
discoverer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa became the
first European to set eyes on the Pacific Ocean back
in 1512.
The
pristine valley of Cana in the eastern slope of Pirre
mountain range is Darien National Park’s most
productive birdwatching destination. Nowhere else in
Panama does nature expresses itself so abundantly than
in this region of remote wilderness.
The
western highlands of Panama are some of the most picturesque
in Central America. The cool, humid cloud forests of
this region are home to a variety of birds, including
Quetzals, Bellbirds, Solitaires and Redstarts and the
countryside is dotted with flower, fruit and vegetable
farms and coffee plantations.
Without
a doubt the best preserved of all of the indigenous
cultures of the Americas is the Kuna. The Kuna people
are so determined to protect their heritage that
they have maintained their autonomy. In Kuna Yala
(the land of the Kuna), known to the rest of the
world as the San Blas Islands, an indigenous independent
Congress still rules. Comprised by some 365 islands,
less than 60 of them are inhabited. Turquoise waters
surround white-sand beaches dotted with palm trees
and thatched-roof Kuna villages.
The
premontane rainforest of the PEMASKY (Project for the Study
and Management of Wilderness Areas of Kuna Yala) located
at Nusagandi in the eastern foothills of Panama has been
rated as one of the top ten areas in the world by Smithsonian
scientists in terms of abundance of flora and fauna.
