Day
1
PANAMA
CITY - PEMASKY NATURE PARK.
 |
The
premontane rainforest of the PEMASKY (Project for
the Study and Management of Wilderness Areas of
Kuna Yala) located at Nusagandi in the eastern
foothills of Panama has been rated as one of the
top ten areas in the world by Smithsonian scientists
in terms of abundance of flora and fauna. Leave
Panama City early this morning, traveling in a
4-wheel drive vehicle to the San Blas mountain
range (rough, muddy roads). |
PEMASKY
Nature Park is located in the Kuna Yala Indian Reserve
which borders the province of Panama. The Kuna General
Congress created this reserve to protect its "back
door" from the creeping deforestation caused by the
Pan American Highway and adjacent roads. With the help
of the MacArthur Foundation and the World Wildlife
Fund, the Kunas built a two-story wooden lodge that
is basic and clean, with hostel-style dormitories,
bunk-beds and separate toilet and shower facilities.
This afternoon, hike with your naturalist guide through
the Kuna Medicinal Forest Trail ("Ina Igar") where
seventeen trees used by the Kuna Indians for medicinal
purposes have been identified. This evening, enjoy
a hearty barbeque dinner and a comfortable night's
sleep at the Lodge.

Day
2
PEMASKY
NATURE PARK - PANAMA CITY.
Rise
at dawn to the calls of Howler monkeys and observe
the birds of the area, returning for breakfast
and a trek to one of three waterfalls located deep
within the pristine rainforest (1-3 hour hike,
depending upon which waterfall is visited). PEMASKY
Nature Park is famous among birdwatchers and nature
lovers since its forest is connected directly to
the jungles of Darien through the mountain range,
thereby offering outstanding opportunity to view
many species of flora and fauna. |
